Before the birth of John the Baptist, an angel had appeared to John’s father and told him of the impending birth and the role of his soon-to-be son (Luke 1:16-17). The prophecy about John said that he would go before the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elijah.” Our view of going “in the power of Elijah” would be that John would do all sorts of flashy miracles, but John didn’t do any miracles at all (John 10:41). God’s view of man exerting power on earth and ours are obviously different. God sees the use of His power on earth as being that which changes people, not that which puts on a good show. God is more interested in changing us than He is in satisfying our earthly desires. That is the real miracle.
