He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
We could translate this as:
“He came home and His own home folks rejected Him.”
The phrase “his own” (idios) is translated as “his own home” in (John 19:27). “His own” were generally, all of mankind, but more specifically, God’s chosen people, to whom He had given all the promises over the centuries of a coming Deliverer, a Servant Who would bring salvation to them, and yet, when He did come to His own “home folks” they didn’t recognize Him or accept Him. Imagine a soldier coming home after a lengthy tour of duty abroad and his parents, his brothers and sisters, even his own wife doesn’t recognize him or accept him. What would he feel like? What a tragedy!!
John 19:27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
God spent a lot of time and effort preparing the Jewish nation to be the birthing place for His Messiah, and yet, they pretty much blew it (as He knew they would). They weren’t really ready when the Word became flesh, and they never would be. They weren’t the only people God prepares for special work He has planned for them, though. He spends a lot of time and effort on each one of us to make us ready for a special task only we can do. Will you accept whatever God has in store for you or will you be like the Jews when Messiah did come and reject Him? We must be extra careful, because we, like them, may be rejecting God’s awesome plans without ever knowing it. Be open to God and the leading of His Holy Spirit.
