Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him.
The result of the miracle is division. There are many who put their faith in Jesus; but there are many of the eyewitnesses who don’t. How can someone, in the face of overwhelming physical and experiential evidence, fail to arrive at the obvious conclusion? But do we not have the same miracle occurring today? How many unbelievers have witnessed the resurrection of a friend who was dead in sin into a life-changing (and life-giving) relationship with God; and yet they have failed to believe in the face of such evidence? When we are brought face to face with Christ, there is no middle road. We either reject Him or we accept Him. By His nature, He inevitably brings division.
A faith based on miracles is not the highest faith, but it is one that is accepted by God until it may be developed further.
