He was with God in the beginning.
Verse 2 is a restatement of the first part of verse 1, for emphasis and clarification. The Word was God but He was also with God. Sometimes we need to be taught in the same manner a nail needs to be driven into a board: the point needs to be hit home several times before total success is achieved.
