I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

Christ has given us an example (Matt 11:29, Eph 5:2, 1 Peter 2:21).

Matthew 11:29  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Ephesians 5:2  and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

1 Peter 2:21  To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

Temple notes that “We would gladly wash the feet of our Divine Lord; but He disconcertingly insists on washing ours, and bids us wash our neighbor’s feet.”

In their attempts to follow His example, the pope every year, on Thursday in the passion week, washes the feet of twelve men; and it is also an anniversary ceremony performed by the kings of England and France, to wash the feet of twelve poor people.

The example that Jesus gives us, however, is not that of footwashing, but of service. We are to not hesitate in doing that which we consider to be lowly or humiliating, and not just for our brothers, but also for the world. In spite of our personal problems and in spite of the evil that has been done to us, we must still minister to the needs of others, just as Jesus would.

Question: What would you not do for Jesus?

Do church officers, teachers, or pastors have any jobs that they must delegate because they are beneath their dignity of office? What exactly is “dignity of office” in the eyes of Jesus?

We are all called to serve. Don’t let pride keep you from following the example of our Lord.
