“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.
Jesus welcomed them, not just to come and talk, but to come and find out answers which only He could give. He was not referring to their seeing the place in which He was staying. Note that the answers Jesus gives are always positive.
The tenth hour was about 4:00 in the afternoon. Such a precise note of the time indicates that it was probably John who was with Andrew. Another indication is that he didn’t name the companion of Andrew which would imply that it was him. Decades later when he wrote his gospel he remembered the exact hour that he met Jesus.
Nothing can come between Christ and meeting people’s needs. While He was on the earth, nothing — not sleep, hunger, or exhaustion — could keep Jesus from drawing near to those who wished to draw near to Him. He is no different today. When you turn to Him, His arms are wide open.
His response to the two was an invitation to get to know him better. They had heard about Him from John the Baptist, but now Jesus invites them to come and hear first-hand from Him. Christianity is a personal relationship with God. Jesus is constantly inviting you to come and chat with Him. You need to learn first-hand from Jesus Himself and hear what He has to say to you and not get all of your information from others. Don’t be content with second-hand information. Follow Him!
“was staying” and “spent” are the same word in the Greek (meno = abide). It speaks of the close relationship that we can have with Jesus.
