Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
“Andrew” = Andreas = means “manly”. When the writer of this gospel introduces Andrew, he points out his relationship to his more famous brother and this is the way he is characteristically identified, as the brother of Simon Peter. Andrew always lived under the shadow of Peter. Nobody may know who Andrew was but everyone knew Peter. Andrew was not even one of the inner circle of disciples even though he was one of the first 2 to follow Jesus. It would have been easy for him to resent always taking second place to Peter but he never did. All that mattered to him was to be with Jesus and to serve Him the best he possibly could. He was a great example to us of true humility.
