Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Peter had previously asked Jesus a similar question in response to a statement Jesus had made of His going someplace where they could not come (13:33, 36), so how could they know the way?
John 13:33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
John 13:36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
None of the disciples understood what Jesus was talking about, but only one had the guts to speak up and ask Him. It is part of our nature to not ask directions, but Thomas does not let pride keep him from discovering the truth. Morris notes that “the man’s fundamental honesty stands revealed.” It is only the one who seeks, that will find (Matt 7:7). Don’t ever let pride keep you from growing in your relationship with Christ. Ask for directions.
Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Matthew Henry says that “His confession of his ignorance was commendable enough. . . . But, the cause of his ignorance was culpable. They knew not whither Christ went, because they dreamed of a temporal kingdom.” Their thinking was carnal instead of spiritual.
