Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
The disciples are filled with grief because they are looking at the departure of Jesus from a selfish standpoint. If they had looked at it with love for Him in their hearts and in their motives, they would have been glad (John 14:28).
John 14:28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
Jesus wants to bless us and He desires to answer our prayers, but how often we spend all or most of our quiet time with Him in trying to receive from Him and spend little or no time in trying to bless Him? We are often like the disciples by selfishly trying to get all we can out of Jesus instead of trying to give Him what would please Him the most. He desires for us to seek Him for Himself and not for what He can do for us. We need to be like the little boy who came and sat on his daddy’s lap. His dad asked him if what he wanted was a dollar and his son replied, “No, daddy, just you.”
