It was cold, and the servants and officials stood round a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.

There was danger in joining them and danger in not joining them, but notice what a little thing brings Peter into the company of his enemies and proves to be his downfall for his second temptation: he just wants to get warm. “If Peter’s zeal for his Master had not frozen, but had continued in the heat it seemed to be of but a few hours before, he had not had occasion to warm himself now.” (Henry) What were these men probably doing? Making fun of Jesus. And Peter is associating with them (Psa 141:4). How many times have we either joined scoffers or kept silent when they were scoffing our Lord? May we learn from Peter’s mistakes! That is why God has them recorded in His Word.

Psalms 141:4  Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.
