The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

The woman had 5 previous husbands and the relationship she now was in did not even use the form of marriage to cover over her sin.  The 5 marriages had probably ended in divorces for the most part.  The divorce laws of the day were quite loose (at least for the man). Even the great Jewish rabbi Hillel said that a man might divorce his wife if she burnt his dinner while cooking and it is quite probable that the Samaritans had a similar outlook on divorce.

As we shall see in the next verse, she does not dispute what Jesus has said, and in doing so, has indeed verified it. Jesus revealed a more than human knowledge here, but this does not negate His true humanity; instead it is an indication of the provision of God for His every need for ministry.  Do we have a similar provision? How do we, like Jesus, partake of it?
