The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
She suspected that Jesus was Messiah. She used the word “know” to respond to the comment of Jesus in verse #22. She was saying, “We Samaritans may not know what we are worshipping, but I do know one thing and that is that the Messiah is coming and he will explain everything to us that we do not know…just like you are doing right now.”
John 4:22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
The Samaritan name for Messiah was Taheb, “He who returns” or “He who restores.” Due to their rejection of all the books of the Old Testament except for the Pentateuch, the Samaritan’s knowledge of the Messiah was severely limited, but based on that which they did possess, this Redeemer who was to return was expected to teach the faithful all that which God instructs him to tell as indicated in Deut 18:18.
Deut 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.Although her concept of Messiah was crude, it was in some ways closer to the truth than the Jewish view of a conquering Messiah.
