The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

“slipped” = ekneyo = the turn the head to the side; to get away by swimming; to slip away secretly.  Not only did the man not know who his healer was, but he could not point him out because he had slipped away among the crowd that had naturally gathered to observe this great happening.  Augustine comments on this verse that, “It is difficult in a crowd to see Christ: a certain solitude is necessary for our mind; it is by a certain solitude of contemplation that God is seen.” (qt’d in Morris p. 307) God says it another way in His word when He tells us to “Be still and know that I am God.” (#Psa 46:10)

Ps 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
