“murmured” = like the Israelites did against God in the wilderness. Hoskyns states that these Jews “preserve the genuine succession of unbelief” from their forefathers. (qt’d Morris 370) This word indicates a sound “like the cooing of doves or the buzzing of bees.” (RWP) The Jews take offense at what Jesus said and start talking amongst themselves against it, thus producing a confused crowd sound.
