As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
“you are determined to kill me, a man who has …” = The very reason the Jews are seeking to kill Jesus is that He has told them the truth. Jesus did not tell them His opinions and thoughts and ideas on matters: He told them what God thought about things. He was a true messenger from God. Barclay points out that “At best men can only tell other men the truth as they see it; Jesus told men the truth as God sees it.” Thus, their plot to kill Jesus is based upon hostility to God. They are not just plotting to kill a man; they are plotting to kill a messenger of God because He is telling them what God wants them to hear and they don’t want to hear it.
“Abraham did not do such things.” = The evidence that the Jews are not the spiritual children of Abraham is that they are seeking to kill Jesus and Abraham would never do anything like this! When confronted with the messengers of God in Gen 18:1-8, Abraham welcomed them and treated them royally, the exact opposite of how these descendents of his are treating Jesus!
Genesis 18:1-8 The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. He said, “If I have found favour in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.” “Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.” So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread.” Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
