Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
Jesus undoubtedly gives a lengthy pause between these two sentences in verse 46 to give the Jews time to bring any accusations, which they cannot. But the really amazing thing here is not their lack of accusations, but the making of the challenge. Jesus could not have made it if His conscience were not clear and at peace with God.
“If…” = If there were no sin in His life, then He must be speaking the truth, and if He were speaking the truth, then why did they not believe?
