Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

“judgment” = krisis = a separating and then a decision. We get the word “crisis” from it and it has much the same meaning except that it also has the idea of final settlement and judicial sentence. The crucifixion of Jesus was the “crisis” in the contest between Satan and God (Gen 3:15). “The meaning of it,” says Barnes, “may be thus expressed: Now is approaching  the decisive scene, the eventful period—the crisis —when it shall be determined who shall rule this world.” In addition, the cross will bring judgment to the world, for the world will condemn  itself by its judgment of the Son of God (John 3:18-19).

Genesis 3:15  And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

John 3:18-19  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.  This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

“prince of this world = Satan claimed to have the power over this world when he tempted Jesus in the desert and Jesus did not contradict him (Matt 4:8-10; Luke 4:5 -8). It is not an empty title (2 Cor 4:4, Eph 6:12), but his rule is about to end because a superior kingdom and a superior ruler is coming. The title both stresses the devil’s power in this world and his lack of power in the heavenly realm. The cross will bring not only condemnation upon the world, but also the defeat of Satan. The irony was that Satan was defeated at the very moment when it appeared he had his greatest victory.

Matthew 4:8-10  Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour.  “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”  Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

Luke 4:5-8  The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.  And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendour, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.  So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”  Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”

2 Corinthians 4:4  The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Ephesians 6:12  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
