When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

Wine was an important part of the wedding feast.  In fact, the Rabbis would say, “there is no rejoicing save with wine.” (qt’d in Morris p. 179)

Jesus had not done any miracles up to this point in His life. Although the miraculous beginning of the life of Jesus was 30 years in the past, Mary had watched Him grow and what she must have learned from this 30 years was a total confidence in Jesus. As Edersheim states “And so when she told Him of the want that had arisen, it was simply in absolute confidence in her Son, probably without any conscious expectancy of a miracle on His part.” (Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah I, 360)  Perhaps her motivation was not only in relieving the distress and embarrassment of the wedding party, but in showing the world what she already knew, that Jesus was the Messiah.

It is to be noted that Mary told Jesus of the need and then let Him meet the need in whatever way He thought to be best. She just stated her need and full of faith, expected Jesus to handle it in the best possible manner. Does this have any personal application for you?
