Still, many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?”

Contrast this verse with the preceding one. Generally, the people of Jerusalem rejected Jesus, but the crowds of pilgrims were open to accepting Him. They had closely watched the proceedings with an open mind, unlike the inhabitants of Jerusalem who were filled with pride because of their heritage. Pride is an important weapon in the arsenal of the devil, for with it He can keep us from finding or following God.

“miraculous signs” = it was rightfully thought that the Messiah would do many miracles when he came. (Isaiah 35:5,6)

Isa 35:5-6  Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

The belief of the pilgrim crowds is based upon the miracles of Jesus, which is not the best basis for faith, but is better than no faith at all. Their faith is not condemned here as inadequate.
