“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

“I tell you the truth” = “Verily, verily” (KJV) means “I am telling you the truth; I am telling you the truth” and is meant to get the attention of the hearer and to stress the inportance of what follows.

“I am” = Jesus did not say “I was” which would indicate that He came into existence before Abraham; He said “I am” which declares His pre-existence and eternity of being without beginning or end. He compares the limited existence of the greatest of all men with His eternal existence like the comparison in (Psalms 90:2). This eternal existence is an attribute belonging solely to God, but even more than that, it is an emphatic and unmistakable use by Jesus of the Divine Name (Ex 3:14) and a claim to deity which is fully recognized by the Jews as witnessed by their response in the following verse. The fact is that Jesus is God.

Psalms 90:2  Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Exodus 3:14  God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Divine attributes of Jesus

Self-existence (in this verse and the following)

John 1:4  In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

John 8:58  “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John 14:6  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.
(Note that He says that He is the life; not that He has life.)

Eternal existence

Micah 5:2  “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.

John 8:35  Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it for ever.

Omniscience

Matthew 17:24-27  After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”  “Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?”  “From others,” Peter answered. “Then the sons are exempt,” Jesus said to him.  “But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

John 2:24-25  But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men.  He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

John 4:16-19  He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”  “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.  The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”  “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.

John 6:64  Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.

John 16:30  Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

Omnipotence

John 5:19  Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

Philippians 3:21  who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Revelation 1:8  “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Revelation 1:17-18  When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.  I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. (compare Rev 1:8, 17-18)

Omnipresence

Matthew 18:20  For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”

Matthew 28:20  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Immutability

Hebrews 1:8-12  But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the sceptre of your kingdom.  You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”  He also says, “In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.  You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”

Hebrews 13:8  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever.

In general all of the attributes belonging to the Father

Colossians 2:8-9  See to it that no-one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.  For in Christ all the fulness of the Deity lives in bodily form,

Divine character of Jesus

Holy

Luke 1:35  The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

John 8:46  Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?

Hebrews 4:15  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

Truth

John 14:6  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.

Revelation 3:7  “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no-one can shut, and what he shuts no-one can open.

Love

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 13:34-35  “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Righteousness

Romans 5:17-21  For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.  Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.  For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.  The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,  so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

2 Timothy 4:8  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

1 John 2:1   My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

Divine works of Jesus

Jesus created all things

John 1:3  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

John 1:10  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him.

Colossians 1:16  For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

Hebrews 1:2  but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

Jesus is in charge of everything

Luke 10:22  “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no-one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

John 3:35  The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.

Ephesians 1:22  And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

Colossians 1:17  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Hebrews 1:3  The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Jesus forgives sins against God

Mark 2:5-12  When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”  Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,  “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”  Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?  Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?  But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins….” He said to the paralytic,  “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”  He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Acts 5:31  God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Saviour that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

Colossians 3:13  Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Jesus gives eternal life

John 17:2  For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

1 John 5:10-12  Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.  And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Jesus will raise the dead at the resurrection

John 5:21  For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

John 5:28-29  “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice  and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

John 6:39-40  And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.  For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:54  Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 11:25  Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

Jesus will judge all men in the final judgment

Matthew 25:31-46  “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.  All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.  “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,  I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’  “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’  “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’  “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,  I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’  “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’  “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

John 5:22  Moreover, the Father judges no-one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,

John 5:27  And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

Acts 10:42  He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.

Acts 17:31  For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.”

Romans 2:16  This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

2 Corinthians 5:10  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due to him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

2 Timothy 4:1  In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:

Jesus received worship as God

Worship is reserved only for God

Deuteronomy 6:13  Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.

Matthew 4:10  Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

Angels are not to receive worship

Colossians 2:18  Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions.

Revelation 19:10  At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow-servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Men are not to receive worship

Acts 10:25-26  As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.  But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”

Acts 14:11-15  When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”

Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.  The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.  But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting:  “Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.

Romans 1:23  and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Jesus received and accepted worship

Matthew 2:11  On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

Matthew 28:9  Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshipped him.

Matthew 28:17  When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted.

Luke 24:52  Then they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

John 9:38  Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshipped him.

Revelation 7:9-10  After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no-one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.  And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

Jesus is Yahweh

Calling on the name of the LORD (YHWH) is the same as calling on the name of Jesus

Joel 2:32  And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.

Acts 2:21  And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Romans 10:9-13  That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.  As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”  For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,  for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Calling upon Jesus as Savior denotes trust reserved only for God

Acts 2:38  Peter replied, “Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 53:1 as quoted in John 12:38, 41. “LORD” (all caps) is the translation of YHWH and in John refers to Jesus

Isaiah 53:1  Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

John 12:38  This was to fulfil the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

John 12:41  Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.

Isaiah 40:3 quoted in Matthew 3:3 and Mark 1:3 (LORD again is YHWH and refers to Jesus)

Isaiah 40:3  A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.

Matthew 3:3  This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”

Mark 1:3  “a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”

Divine claims about Jesus

Jesus is called ‘God’

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:18  No-one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.

John 20:28  Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Acts 20:28  Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

Romans 9:5  Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, for ever praised! Amen.

Titus 2:13  while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

Hebrews 1:8  But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the sceptre of your kingdom.

2 Peter 1:1  Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:

1 John 5:20  We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

“YHWH our Righteousness” (“LORD” is the English translation of YHWH — the Name of God)

Jeremiah 23:5-6  “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.  In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.

Immanuel

Isaiah 7:14  Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Matthew 1:23  “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”— which means, “God with us.”

Jesus claims equality with God

John 5:17-18  Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”  For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

John 5:23  that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. He who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father, who sent him.

John 10:30-33  I and the Father are one.”  Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him,  but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”  “We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

John 10:38  But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”

John 12:44-45  Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.  When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me.

John 14:6-11  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.  If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”  Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”  Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?  Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.  Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

John 15:23  He who hates me hates my Father as well.

Jesus is the very image of God

2 Corinthians 4:4  The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Philippians 2:5-6  Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

Colossians 1:15  He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

Hebrews 1:3  The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Jesus says He is God

Matthew 4:7  Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

The Name “Jesus”

A name was not a mere label

Biblically, a name disclosed facts about its bearer.  For example, note that God changed Jacob’s name to Israel after He changed his character.

Genesis 32:28  Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.”

The angel of God told Joseph to give the Child the name “Jesus”

Matthew 1:21  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

“Jesus” is a variant of “Joshua” and means “YHWH is salvation”
