You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

There is no object for the verb “ask” in this verse, but it seems likely that Jesus was saying that we should ask Him for anything. In other words, it is okay to pray to Jesus. This seems to be vindicated by the prayer of Stephen in (Acts 7:59) and John in (Rev 22:20). NIV translates this as “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” (emphasis added)Prayer may be addressed to the Son as well as the Father, but it still must be “in His name.”

Acts 7:59  While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

Revelation 22:20  He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Again, doing anything in the name of someone is acting as their representative. When we pray in Christ’s name we are praying what He would have prayed. What this means for us is that when we come ot know exactly what Jesus would pray in a situation and we pray that prayer, we will get what we ask for every single time.
